Metro Moneywise Credit Union has celebrated 35 years of helping local people manage their money the co-operative way. The milestone was marked with a special evening at Rochdale Town Hall, bringing together founding members, payroll partners, credit union friends and members to recognise those who have shaped the organisation since 1990.

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial co-operatives that exist to help members save safely and borrow affordably and Metro Moneywise has been doing just that for more than three decades. Since its beginnings, it has welcomed over 13,000 members, protected more than £11 million in savings and issued over £66 million in loans.

Rochdale MP Paul Waugh, who joined the celebrations, said it was “a real pleasure to present Lorraine with her Founding Employee award on what was a fabulous night to mark Metro Moneywise’s 35th anniversary,” adding that her “dedication and long service are everything that is great about Rochdale and its residents.”

Paul Waugh also spoke recently in Parliament about the importance of the co-operative movement and said “it’s still a movement that’s alive and kicking today – not a relic, as is very much evidenced by Metro Moneywise Credit Union.”

Metro Moneywise CEO Ciara Davies said the evening was a chance to reflect on how far the organisation has come and to celebrate everyone who has contributed to its success. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together,” she said, “and look forward to continuing to serve our members, putting them at the heart of everything we do.”
