This notice is for our online community users who are provided access through their membership of the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL). We are committed to safeguarding the privacy and data rights of our members. Please read this notice for information about how we process your data and how to exercise your data rights.

How we use your personal information 

ABCUL uses your personal data to register your account and allow you to access member-only areas of our website and online community.

Information we process

We will process your name, contact details, the credit union you work for and your role in your credit union. We may also store further information about if you voluntarily provide this to your personal profile or through your use of the online community.

Legal basis for processing

We will only process your data where we have a legal basis in accordance to data protection law. For our website our legal bases are:

  • Where processing is necessary for the performance of a contract to which you are a party
  • Where it is necessary for our legitimate interests (or those of a third party) and your interests and fundamental rights do not override those interest

Track your contributions and use of the online community Legitimate interests (we will monitor the use of the community and provide you information about your own activity)
Using your information to send you updates and digests for your online communities. Consent (these are only provided if requested by you)
Storing the content of your personal profile and posts written by you Consent (where you provide personal details on your profile or participate in discussions or blogs, you consent to us storing that information)
Direct marketing

We may periodically send promotional communications about new products or services which we think would interest you by email, phone, or mail.

You can opt out of marketing at any time by selecting ‘unsubscribe’ on your emails or by letting us know you want to opt-out in any other way.

Necessary for our legitimate interests (in the case of our business contacts to promote the use of our other services). We do not offer services to the general public.

Retaining your information

We will retain your information only for as long as we need to and in accordance with data protection legislation. We will remove your information once you cease to work for a credit union or on request.

How your data is shared

We will share your information with our third party suppliers in order to help us provide the ABCUL Academy service to you or assist you. We only permit them to process your data for under our instruction and for the purposes specified by us and we do not allow them to use your data for their own purposes.
