Lewisham Plus Credit Union (LPCU) is a vital resource for residents of Lewisham and Bromley boroughs, offering accessible financial services that are transforming lives. With around £16 million in savings and £8 million in loans, LPCU has become a cornerstone of the local community, with over 16,000 adult members and 1,300 junior members benefiting from its fair and responsible financial products.
Operating from four branches across the city, Lewisham Plus Credit Union is more than just a financial institution – it’s a community-focused organisation dedicated to improving the financial wellbeing of its members. Locals consistently praise the credit union as “the best way for local employees and residents to access banking services and reasonable loans at low interest rates.”
Liam, a long-time staff member of the credit union, explains that what sets LPCU apart from high street banks is its genuine sense of community and personal connection. “Credit unions are more accessible, especially when it comes to meeting customers face-to-face in difficult circumstances and providing direct answers to their questions,” Liam said. “It’s all about real, human interaction, which makes a big difference.”
Unlike traditional banks, Lewisham Plus Credit Union doesn’t rely on advertising, with most of its business coming through word of mouth. This emphasis on customer satisfaction is a testament to the credit union’s dedication to serving its members. “Banks are often criticised for their lack of personal service, but at the credit union, fairness is at the heart of everything we do,” Liam added. “My shareholders are my members, and I’m here to serve them – whether that means helping them now or providing honest guidance on how to manage their financial situation in the future.”
The credit union’s member-owned model distinguishes it from high street banks, which prioritise shareholders. “Our duty is to serve our members and ensure we act in their best interests,” said Liam. “It’s all about the local community – these are the people who live and work beside me. I see them in the shops, and I’ve built real, personal relationships with them over the past 30 years.”
For many members, the impact of joining Lewisham Plus Credit Union is life-changing. One local shared their experience: “I had never been able to save money before discovering Lewisham Plus. I was in complete financial turmoil until I took out a Save as You Borrow loan. Paying off the loan showed me that I was capable of saving and managing my finances.”
“If you live or work in Lewisham or Bromley, Lewisham Plus Credit Union is here to support you. Whether you’re looking to save, take out a loan, or simply want to be part of a community-focused financial institution.”
