Last Saturday morning, six women from local credit unions laced up their walking shoes for a special tour around Manchester’s historic sites linked to women’s history. The walk was organised by the Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN) in Britain, bringing members together for a morning of learning, reflection, and connection.

The group embarked on a three-mile route through the city, uncovering the stories of pioneering women who shaped Manchester’s past. From suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst and poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy to family planning pioneer Marie Stopes and celebrated author Elizabeth Gaskell, the walk highlighted the city’s proud legacy of campaigners, reformers, and community leaders who fought for progress and social change.

Despite a forecast of heavy showers, the group managed to dodge most of the rain, sharing stories and reflections along the way. The morning became as much about camaraderie as it was about discovery—an opportunity to walk, talk, and celebrate the achievements of women, both past and present, in Manchester.

Stops along the route included the Emmeline Pankhurst statue, Manchester Writing School, the Marie Stopes plaque, Manchester Museum, and a guided tour of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House.

Ciara Davies, Chair of the Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN) in Britain, said: “It was a real delight to come together with colleagues and explore the stories of Manchester’s trailblazing women. Recognising the pioneers of the past helps inspire us to continue pushing for change in our communities today.

“The energy and conversation on the walk showed just how powerful these connections can be. We’re already looking ahead to our next walk in London and to developing the future of the GWLN, ensuring we create even more opportunities for women across the credit union movement to connect, learn, and lead.”
