Thursday 16 October 2025 marks International Credit Union Day – a global celebration of the spirit and success of the credit union movement. This year, under the theme “Cooperation for a Prosperous World,” credit unions across Great Britain have joined forces with colleagues around the globe to showcase the powerful role credit unions play in building financial wellbeing and inclusive communities.
Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been an opportunity to reflect on the history, achievements and collective impact of the global credit union movement. Across social media and local communities this week, credit unions from England, Scotland and Wales have been sharing stories, hosting events and raising awareness of the difference they make to the financial lives of their members. From open days and school visits to social media campaigns and local partnerships, credit unions have been shining a light on the cooperative values that set them apart.
Across Great Britain, credit unions continue to provide a vital community-led alternative to high-cost and inaccessible financial services. The sector now serves over 1.57 million members, holds £2.70 billion in assets, and supports £1.82 billion in affordable loans, demonstrating its growing importance in helping people build financial stability and resilience.
ABCUL Chief Executive Matt Bland said: “On behalf of ABCUL, I want to wish all our members and partners across Great Britain – and the entire global credit union family – a very happy International Credit Union Day. This year’s theme, ‘Cooperation for a Prosperous World’, perfectly captures the spirit of our movement. Credit unions exist to make a difference – not just for individuals, but for communities and society as a whole.
“Here in Great Britain, we’re proud to be working in partnership with Government as part of the financial inclusion strategy to double the size of the credit union sector, ensuring more people than ever can benefit from the fair, affordable and ethical services our members provide. Together, we are growing stronger and building a more inclusive financial future for everyone.”
As celebrations take place worldwide – through community events, volunteering, and digital campaigns – International Credit Union Day 2025 serves as a reminder of what cooperation can achieve. Credit unions remain united by a common purpose: to empower people, strengthen communities and create prosperity through mutual support.
