ABCUL is proud to support Talk Money Week 2025, running from 3–7 November, raising awareness of the work credit unions are doing to start meaningful conversations about money. Across the country, credit unions are championing financial wellbeing and empowering people to take control of their finances – Bradford District Credit Union (BDCU) is leading the way.

As part of the national campaign themed “Start the Conversation”, BDCU is hosting a series of activities designed to get people talking about money, financial resilience and community wellbeing. From roadshows and community events to a flagship national webinar, the credit union is using the week to highlight the role that open discussions about money can play in improving financial confidence and strengthening communities.

Protecting Communities from Financial Harm

A key highlight of the week will be BDCU’s free national webinar, “Protecting Communities from Financial Harm”, taking place on Wednesday 5 November at 13:00.
This dynamic and practical session will bring together national experts to tackle the financial threats facing individuals and communities today — from fraud and illegal lending to gambling harm and financial resilience.
Participants will come away informed, protected, and empowered to take action.

The webinar will also mark the relaunch of BDCU’s payroll partnership with Bradford Council and the Bradford Children and Families Trust, enabling employees to save and borrow responsibly straight from their pay — helping more people build financial security where they work.

New Research: The Role of Credit Unions in Building Resilient Communities

To coincide with Talk Money Week, BDCU will unveil new research in partnership with the University of York, developed alongside anti-poverty and public health networks in Bradford and Kirklees.

The embargoed study (to be published Wednesday) highlights the vital role credit unions play in improving public health, strengthening local economies, and fostering community resilience. BDCU’s own work is showcased as a key case study, and findings will be presented through an engaging, easy-to-read zine produced with local partners.

Community at the Core

As a community development credit union, BDCU continues to grow from strength to strength — expanding from 3,000 to over 11,000 members in just eight years, with 4,000 staff saving across 34 payroll partners. They are winning awards too with ‘Lender of the Year’, ‘Apprentice of the Year’ and ‘Mentor of the Year’ won in 2025 alone.

Throughout Talk Money Week, BDCU teams will also be on campus and in communities — engaging with Bradford Council, Bradford College and the University of Bradford — to encourage more people to start their financial wellbeing journey through savings, borrowing and support from their local credit union.

Katie Hurrell, CEO of BDCU, said: “Talking about money helps break down barriers, tackle stigma and build stronger communities and, at BDCU, we believe financial confidence starts with honest conversations – exactly what Talk Money Week is all about.

“Whether you want to save more, manage debt or simply understand your financial options, Talk Money Week 2025 offers the perfect opportunity to learn, connect and take control, which is why we’re inviting everyone in Bradford and beyond to take part.

“Financial resilience starts with real conversations – and this week is where it begins.”
