A Bolton MP has become a member of Hoot Credit Union and is encouraging local residents to support one of the town’s key community institutions. Kirith Entwistle, MP for Bolton North East, signed up during a recent visit to Hoot’s headquarters on Victoria Square in the town centre.

She said she hoped to encourage other residents in Bolton to do the same. Ms Entwistle said: “When we save with the credit union it helps other local residents to borrow money at affordable rates.

“I’m sure my new account will be perfect to put money aside for next Christmas, and I know that I’ll be helping the community at the same time.” In December last year, Hoot Credit Union estimated that around 8,000 people across the borough were in the hands of illegal money lenders.

According to Hoot’s research, every £1 someone deposits into one of its savings account will save someone else £250 in loan interest by helping people avoid high-cost lenders.

Ms Entwistle was welcomed on her visit to Hoot Credit Union by chief executive Chris Canham. Chris said: “We were very pleased to receive a visit from Kirith, who we know is a great supporter of the credit union.

“During her visit, we discussed the importance of encouraging the community to start saving, access to affordable credit, and the need for more financial education.”
