Credit Union Director, James McMillan, was announced as the winner of the prestigious Non-Exec Director of the Year Award 2020 (North West & Isle of Man) by the Institute of Directors.

The Awards has grown over the past 16 years to represent the pinnacle of leadership and business excellence highlighting the significant contribution business leaders can make to society and the economic prosperity in its region. Directors from diverse regional businesses have been recognised at these prestigious awards.

Stockport Credit Union is a community based savings and lending institution. In recent times they have developed innovative products and services, which include working with businesses in their local area to provide payroll solutions. SCU is going through an exciting period, with growth and change happening. SCU is now seeking to further strengthen its Board and broader team through the recruitment of new staff, volunteers and Board members.

Presenting the award by video, Jonathan Lowe from RSM, said: “The winner stood out as an individual that showcases a commitment and passion for embedding excellence within their organisation. They demonstrate clear industry insight, best practice mindset, and strong commercial edge for such a young age.”

Mark Bates, Chairman of Stockport Credit Union said: ‘The Board are delighted with James’ deserved success. His commitment since he joined us has been immense and we have greatly benefited from his drive, passion and skills.

James McMillan said: “I’m honoured to have received this external recognition as a testament not just to my personal contribution, but to the hard work and success of the staff, Board and volunteers of Stockport Credit Union, who work tirelessly to build financial inclusion for the benefit of the whole Stockport community.”

Robert Kelly, ABCUL Chief Executive commended James on receiving this award. Robert said: “Credit unions across Britain rely on the commitment, skill and leadership of volunteers serving on Boards and committees and James is a shining example of the difference individuals can make when they serve as Directors. ABCUL and all its members are proud of this achievement and the attention it has drawn to the our sector.”
