This month’s South Yorkshire Financial Inclusion Awards 2020, saw Sheffield Credit Union awarded the award for Promoting Financial Inclusion in its community.
The awards celebrate local people and organisations who are making a difference in their communities by helping people to manage their money.
Held at the historic Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield, the event was hosted by Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis MP, with winners awarded up to £1,000 as a donation to continue their good work. The judging panel was very impressed by the range of nominations received, and the work done across South Yorkshire every day to ensure that residents have the financial tools and skills they need to thrive.
Chief Executive Officer at Sheffield Credit Union, Jackie Hallewell said: “We felt privileged to be recognised for this award, amongst all the worthy nominees in the room. The events, and award, are a wonderful way to recognise the hard work and dedication carried out in the area, and particularly by our staff team and volunteers to improve the financial resilience and wellbeing of our members.”
Sheffield Credit Union provides ethical, affordable loans and makes a major contribution to financial inclusion in the region both through its provision to members and through its partnership work with other local services and national campaigns.
Sheffield Credit Union helps customers to access the right financial products for them and encourages them to save, even just small amounts each week. This helps to build financial resilience by giving customers a cushion or safety net that they can use when needed either by accessing their savings or taking out an affordable loan against those savings.
As one of the nominators explained: “Dealing with finances, especially when you are financially excluded, can be so scary for people. Sheffield Credit Union provides a friendly, human and compassionate service to help people feel in control again.”
