Serve and Protect CU is recognising an important milestone in the business’s history this month. Saturday 3rd of June 2023 marked the 35th Anniversary of the registration of Northumbria Police Credit Union, one of the founding police credit unions to merge into what is now Serve and Protect CU.

Northumbria Police Credit Union began operations in June 1988 in the Police Headquarters at Ponteland, Newcastle, to assist the financial needs of both officers and staff of Northumbria Police. In 2003, seven like-minded credit unions serving Police forces across the UK merged to form Police Credit Union. By joining forces, Police Credit Union (now trading as Serve and Protect CU) was able to bring financial support to more officers and staff across the nation and provide services beyond savings and loans.

Since 2003, the credit union has expanded its common bond to include employees of the Prison and Probation services, Armed Forces, Fire and Rescue services, and Health and Social Care sector. Serve and Protect CU now have over 42,000 members across the five sectors.

Serve and Protect CU are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the original merger this year. Business Development Manager at Serve and Protect CU, Robert Lovesey, had this to say: “Although this year marks the 20th Anniversary of the launch of Serve and Protect (formerly Police Credit Union), it’s important to remember our heritage. None of this would have been possible without the foresight of the original seven Constabulary Credit Unions. The shared vision of ‘strength in unity’, facilitated the merger in 2003 to further enhance the range of products and services available to all their members.”
