Chief Executive of Salford Credit Union, Sheila Murtagh, has sent a message to the people of Salford most affected by the coronavirus pandemic with the promise: “we’re here for you”.

The credit union has adapted its services and products to make sure those most in need of the credit union’s services will have access to them.

Sheila Murtagh said: “The current pandemic has presented a challenge to us, our members and our wonderful city in ways that we have never experienced before. Here at Salford Credit Union, we are doing all we can to make sure we can help our members.

“We have decided to scrap our £3 membership fee to remove the barrier for people short of money during the coronavirus crisis.

“We’re being as flexible as possible to support those who save and borrow with us and we are working with members who are struggling to meet repayments to explore options for loan payment holidays.

“We are still available to contact via email, and we are protecting staff with a rota of office shifts that provide coverage during office hours of 10am -12pm every week day of our member phone line.

“While we continue working to support members during the pandemic, we remain hopeful for the future: we are investing in ways to make it easier than ever for members to manage their money with us.

Through the challenges, the spirit of credit unions remains strong: we want to thank fellow credit unions who have demonstrated the ‘credit union difference’ by being there for their members not just in the UK, but across the world.”
