Wolverhampton City Credit Union (WCCU) is delighted to announce that it has been named as the first credit union organisation in the UK to be awarded the RACE Equality Code Mark.

The RACE Equality Code Mark is a code and framework issued by The Governance Forum to organisations across all sectors, of any size, which addresses a specific challenge; How to deal with race inequality in the Boardroom and Senior Leadership Team? The code provides a set of standards which is endorsed, regularly reviewed and easy to adopt by any type or size of organisation.

The award will be for 3 years whereupon, another self-assessment will take place. A spokesperson for WCCU said: “we found the process extremely beneficial and acknowledge that the various elements will help us to continue to strengthen our equality, diversity and inclusion strategies. We are proud to be fully committed to race equality at all levels.”

To gain this accreditation, WCCU has completed a self-assessment against the code requirements explaining in a comprehensive manner the outcomes of our practise. The assessment was then rigorously reviewed, and accreditation gained.

WCCU demonstrated compliance with the code by:

  • Outlining how you will apply the main principles
  • Complying with the provisions on a comply or explain basis
  • Providing explanations of how you will achieve the Must provisions that were assessed as partial compliance

“I am pleased to be working with Wolverhampton City Credit Union to improve inclusion and diversity. Their commitment to undertake a comprehensive diagnostic process and implement the RACE code demonstrates the type of leadership that is needed to move the dial on equality. They are on a journey of transformational change that will improve representation for those from ethnic groups.” Dr Karl George MBE, Director of The Governance Forum Limited.
