Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has praised the work of local credit unions, following an event at the Scottish Parliament where she caught up with Rutherglen-based 1st Class Credit Union.

The credit union sector has seen significant growth during the ongoing cost of living crisis, in part driven by the closure of local banking services. 1st Class Credit Union serves past and present members of the CWU and PCS Unions, other communications industry workers – and their family members.

SNP MSP Haughey said: “Credit unions, like 1st Class in Rutherglen, do fantastic work supporting communities, and helping people with savings, loans, and financial advice.

“I was delighted to visit 1st Class Credit Union when they first opened to welcome them to the area, and it’s fantastic to see them going from strength to strength.

“When people are becoming more detached from traditional, face-to-face banking services, the personalised service and specialist advice that credit unions can offer is so valuable.”

CEO of 1st Class Credit Union, Gayle Adnyana added: “We were delighted to play a pivotal role at the recent parliamentary reception on the subject of credit unions, especially given the First Minister was in attendance.

“It was great to catch up again with Clare Haughey MSP who is a great ambassador for the Credit Union movement.”
