Metro Moneywise Credit Union recently launched its own monthly Prize Linked Savings draw and was excited to announce the first winner of the new scheme. The lucky member was Kath Greenwood, a retired Rochdale Council Employee and she won the credit union’s monthly prize draw of £5,000.

Having grown up in Spotland and Falinge in Rochdale when the council attempted to demolish homes for new development, which would have displaced the community, Kath and her neighbours opposed the council and stopped the demolition. Following this, the group established a housing association to protect tenants’ rights and bring the community together, and the small local housing association is still in operation today.

“This experience changed me, as I never thought someone like me could stand up at the Town Hall and speak up for my community. People thought no one would listen to us, but we proved that by working together we had a voice.” Recounted Kath.

This sparked a passion for community development and she found the ‘people helping people’ mantra of credit unions appealing and Kath has now been a member of Metro Moneywise Credit Union for over 20 years.

“It was a pleasure and a privilege to meet the very first Metro Moneywise Credit Union member to win our monthly prize savings of £5,000” said Metro Moneywise Credit Union CEO, Ciara Davies. Ciara continued, “Kathleen is the living embodiment of what it means when we talk about the power of people helping people and we were delighted to meet her and present her with her winnings”.
