Just Credit Union Empowers Financial Education at Local Primary School

As part of its initiative to improve financial education across communities in Shrewsbury, Shropshire-based Just Credit Union recently visited a local school to provide essentials in the subject matter, emphasising the importance of money management and the risks associated with predatory lending practices.

The occasion marked the launch of the school’s ‘Grow a Pound’ initiative, conducted in collaboration with Just Credit Union. Steve Barras, Development Officer at Just Credit Union, remarked, “Financial education is paramount in empowering children to make informed decisions about money from an early age.”

Steve added, “It’s crucial for children to understand the value of money and develop sound financial habits” as the morning assemblies led by Just Credit Union prompted discussion among the students, offering insights into prudent saving habits and the dangers of predatory lenders.

Hannah Fox, a teacher at the school, expressed gratitude for Just Credit Union’s involvement, highlighting its contribution of funds to kick-start the ‘Grow a Pound’ challenge, saying “The initiative not only teaches financial literacy but also encourages students to develop essential life skills”. The challenge requires students to increase their starting funds over the following weeks, promoting the development of practical financial management abilities. Previous rounds of the program have resulted in favourable results, with funds frequently used to improve school activities.

Just Credit Union also recognised the broader societal impact of their collaboration with the Stop Loan Sharks campaign, an initiative led by the England Illegal Money Lending Team. “We’re grateful for the support provided by the Stop Loan Sharks campaign, which aligns with our mission to promote financial literacy and support ethical financial practices,” concluded Steve.
