Celebrating last month on International Credit Union Day, Shropshire based credit union reached the 20-year milestone of providing a vital service to its community.

Just Credit Union (JCU) Chair, Mark Perez said: “We are very much a local organisation supporting the people, economy and communities of Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.

“However, we are also part of a worldwide movement and International Credit Union Day is a great opportunity to reflect on the whole credit union movement.”

As a county-wide community credit union, JCU was ground-breaking when it launched in October 2001. “This followed a significant effort on the part of a local working group which had been established in the late 1990s,” says Mark. Since then, JCU has grown rapidly and supported thousands of people across the county to both save and borrow at an affordable and fair rate.

Mark added: “People who live or work in the county can help their credit union continue to thrive by saving with us. The money saved is lent to local people. And by borrowing from us the interest pays to run the credit union as well as investing in its future.”

Recently JCU were delighted to have been recognised by the financial charity, FairLife by being awarded its FairLife Mark, which was established to raise standards in finance and improve everyday financial products.

Business Development Officer at JCU , Steve Barras said: “Displaying the mark gives members and partners assurance that we operate to the highest of ethical standards.

“The charity promotes a culture of saving and financial education which is very much a part of the Just Credit Union remit.”
