A student from Telford has been announced as the second winner of the Just Credit Union education award.

The education award is in memory of Roger Walker who was a founder member, long time chair and board member of Just Credit Union. He was instrumental in setting up Just Credit Union and remained involved until he passed away in 2020, education of young people was very close to his heart.

The winner of this year’s award, Rebekah, who lives in Telford and is studying history and secondary education, has spoken of her thrill at winning the award which was first launched in 2021 as part of Just Credit Union’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

“My ambition is to become a secondary school teacher and the course I am taking will lead to both a degree and the award of qualified teacher status,” she said. “This is the professional award required to teach in a secondary school. I have two very young children and gaining these qualifications will help me secure my family’s future.

“It will also enable me to buy the essential equipment needed for my course. I am very grateful to Just Credit Union, because the award will make a huge difference to me and my young family.”

Mark Perez, Chair of Just Credit Union, said: “The award is made to help a young person from the region continue their education. I am delighted to announce that this year’s winner is Rebekah. We were very impressed with the quality of applications we received. It was very difficult for the selection panel to decide a winner. After careful consideration, the panel decided to offer the grant to Rebekah and we hope it makes a big difference to her time at university. We wish her well with her studies.”
