In a recent blog on its website, Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union (HEY CU) CEO, John Smith reflects on what’s been an eventful few months for the credit union, following a 21st anniversary celebration and also a change in the way HEY CU usually operates.

In the midst of the lockdown, HEY CU celebrated its 21st anniversary of service to members. A big birthday celebration wasn’t possible for the community, however four prize draws were ran on their social media  channels which generated hundreds of entries.  “For those of us who’ve been with HEY for many years and seen at first hand both its growing pains and achievements, anniversaries provide an opportunity to reflect on the impact made,” John said.  Since the credit union was established it has issued 59,290 loans with a value of £40,977,142 and helped people in its region save well over £20 million in interest payments.

Back in March, the Government announced credit unions were classed as providing “essential financial services”. It was essential to HEY CU’S Directors, Managers and Staff for them to maintain the credit union’s friendly, reliable service that members are used to. “We’ve changed lots of the ways we work,” says John Smith. “We’ve switched more to online and telephone working, brought in new electronic systems and even introduced a special Key Worker Loan deal with preferential rate.”

Having done its risk assessment and put in place measures to protect the credit union’s members and staff team, HEY CU were delighted to reopen Hull, Bridlington, Goole and Scunthorpe branches from Monday 15 June.

John added:  “To our members, we sincerely hope you have kept safe and coped as well as possible with life under lockdown.   We’ve been thinking of you and your loved ones and want you to know that we are still here to support you.”
