Formed in 2002 following mergers dating back to the 1980s, Halton Credit Union based in Cheshire is delighted to be celebrating its 20th anniversary.

First led by local volunteers who believed in a better future for people living in each area by uniting the community to tackle poverty and promote financial inclusion, HCU now has over 5000 Members and in 2018 extended its common bond  which allows people who live and/or work in Cheshire, Stockport, Skelmersdale and Stoke to  join. Since its inception, HCU has given out over £36 million in loans to members. Growth of the credit union means that the organisation is now the employer of 18 local people, a far cry from the humble beginnings of the initial 4 employees, (3 of whom still work for the credit union). HCU is also very proud to say that the majority of its staff come from its volunteer or Membership base.

Gareth Heesom, Deputy CEO  of HCU said, “Halton Credit Union stands on the shoulders of each and every one of these volunteers, and the work they put in. I’m reminded of a quote that was hanging in the office of a credit union… Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.”

Christine Heesom, CEO said: “Becoming a member of Halton Credit Union goes some way to invest in financial security. Not only providing affordable credit but also offering a dividend return on shares whenever we can. As a member you really do matter. Looking forward, we are optimistic about the next year, both in access and services to the Members. I would like to finish by again thanking, staff, Board, and volunteers for their commitment to this credit union and YOU, our members.”
