This week, featuring on BBC Look North,  Financial Inclusion Officer at Bradford District Credit Union, Ian Brewer spoke at a community event raising awareness of how credit unions can help during the cost-of-living crisis.

Urging more members of the community to find support, Ian said: “Bradford Council set the credit union up twenty nine years ago, since then, we’ve grown our membership to over 9,000 members saving £7.5m. Credit unions help people do something they cannot do themselves – get into saving habits affectively, which for some people can be difficult.”

A key area of business for BDCU is its community-based projects with local charitable organisations. In the past six years, BDCU has seen an increase of 6,000 people joining the credit union and this surge in membership is connected to the financial inclusion work it does for its community.

Most recently, BDCU partnering with Inn Churches launched its ‘FoodSavers’ campaign. This is a Bradford Council funded project, which has 10 outlets around Bradford offering low-cost food to the community with members able to save into their BDCU accounts to build up their savings.
