Dumbarton Credit Union celebrates its 30th anniversary

Founded in 1990 by a small group of like minded activists, who wished to provide a positive alternative to high interest loan companies and loan sharks, Dumbarton Credit Union has been providing essential financial services to its local community for 30 years.

As a combination of membership growth and changes in government legislation led to an expansion of its operations, Dumbarton Credit Union has now become unrecognisable to its founder members of 1990.

Reflecting on the Credit Union’s humble beginnings, Manager of Dumbarton Credit Union, Brenda Pasquire said: “Since 1990 with the assistance of many willing, unpaid volunteers the Credit Union has been led on a course of steady, and so far sustainable growth, it would be extremely difficult to overstate the week in week out, year in year out, contribution made by the various volunteers.  While some have contributed more than others, all have given freely of their time and effort. In common with other community based credit unions, our membership had from day one been predominantly female.”

Congratulating Dumbarton on its milestone, ABCUL CEO, Robert Kelly said: “On behalf of the entire Association, I’d like to express our congratulations to Dumbarton Credit Union and thanks for providing three decades of a vital community service.

“Credit unions across the country have humble origin stories and Dumbarton Credit Union is no different. Reflecting on 30 years of operation, all involved with the creation and development of the Credit Union should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved for their members.”
