Staff at Drumchapel Credit Union are participating in a sponsored walk in memory of their work colleague and friend, Norrie Muir who passed away in 2019.
Norrie Muir volunteered at the credit union for more than 20 years helping residents in Drumchapel manage their money. He began as a volunteer before working his way into a job and never looking back.
Norrie attended Waverley Senior Secondary School in Knightswood from 1961 to 1965, then served his apprenticeship as a ship’s draughtsman in the famous John Brown’s yard in Clydebank from 1965 to 1970.
Ruth Kerr, Loan Officer at Drumchapel Credit Union, who worked with Norrie for years, said: “He is a well-liked and well-known character and is very dearly missed, not only at work, but also in the community. We all knew we wanted to do this walk for him as soon as he passed.”
Norrie was also known for his passion for hill walking and was known as a prolific first mountaineer across Scotland. Five years ago, when another employee of the organisation passed away, Norrie stepped in to help organise the route for the fundraiser.
Ruth said: “Norrie volunteered to come with us and keep us on the right track. He was absolutely brilliant. He always put other people first and wanted to make sure we were safe. That is why we want to do the same for him.”
The sponsored walk was originally planned for the one-year anniversary of Norrie’s death in April 2019, but due to the coronavirus pandemic it was rescheduled to his birthday – Saturday, September 19.
The team of 10 at the Drumchapel Credit Union will be starting their route at McMonagle’s in Clydebank, walking their way along the cycle path, and finishing in Balloch.
So far, the organisation has achieved its £1,000 target, however donations are still welcome. All donations raised will be going to Macmillan Cancer Support, as requested by Norrie’s family. To donate and help the team reach their goal visit its go fund me site here.
