This week on Wednesday 19 February 2025, Drumchapel Credit Union is proud to celebrate its 55th anniversary, marking over half a century of service to the local community. Founded in 1970, Drumchapel Credit Union holds the distinguished title of being Scotland’s first credit union. The organisation was established through the vision and dedication of Bert Mullen, whose leadership inspired the formation of many other credit unions across Glasgow and Scotland.

Since its inception, Drumchapel Credit Union has grown to serve 3,000 members, managing £4.5 million in shares and £2.5 million in loans. Its commitment to financial inclusion and community support continues to make a meaningful impact in the lives of its members.

To commemorate this significant milestone, MP Patricia Ferguson visited the Drumchapel office this week to personally congratulate the staff and volunteers for their dedication and hard work in reaching this achievement. In a motion at Scottish Parliament, Patricia Ferguson said: “This House congratulates Drumchapel Credit Union on reaching its 55th anniversary. It is the first credit union in Scotland and recognise its vital contribution to the local community in Drumchapel and Glasgow West, and the vital role it has played in providing accessible financial services and support to its members”.

Chief Executive Officer of Drumchapel Credit Union, Patricia Butler, expressed her gratitude and pride: “Reaching our 55th anniversary is a testament to the resilience, commitment, and community spirit that has defined Drumchapel Credit Union since its founding. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the directors, volunteers, staff, and members, past and present, whose dedication has shaped our credit union into the pivotal institution it is today. This milestone is a celebration of their contributions, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together.”

Robert Kelly, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL), also extended his congratulations: “Drumchapel Credit Union has been at the heart of the community for 55 years, demonstrating the true spirit of the credit union movement—people helping people. Its legacy as Scotland’s first credit union is remarkable, and its ongoing success is a shining example of what can be achieved through cooperative values and dedication. Congratulations to Patricia Butler, her team, and all those who have played a role in making Drumchapel Credit Union the trusted institution it is today.”

Drumchapel Credit Union remains committed to its founding mission of providing ethical and affordable financial services to its members and looks forward to many more years of serving the community.
