Members of the ABCUL staff team were pleased to attend this week’s meeting of the Scottish Cross Party Group (CPG) on Credit Unions, held at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. The meeting brought together Members of the Scottish Parliament and credit union representatives to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the sector in Scotland.

Chaired by Stephen Kerr MSP, the session also included contributions from MSPs John Mason and Michael Marra, highlighting cross-party commitment to credit unions and their vital role in promoting financial wellbeing and inclusion across Scotland.

Liam Boyle of CreditUnion.tv (CUTV) delivered a presentation and led a Q&A session on the growing importance of storytelling in promoting credit unions to a wider audience. Liam’s work through CUTV aims to amplify the voices of credit unions via podcast-style interviews with members, staff and leaders, with a particular focus on helping credit unions connect with younger audiences and the next generation of members.

ABCUL’s Head of Advocacy and Regulatory Affairs, Natalie McQuade said: “Scotland has a strong, collaborative credit union sector, and that spirit of unity was clear throughout the discussions this week. Credit unions in Scotland consistently go above and beyond to serve their communities, and they demonstrate exactly why our movement is so vital to building a fairer, more inclusive financial system.

“I want to thank all the attendees and speakers for their valuable contributions, and at ABCUL, we look forward to working closely with Members of the Scottish Parliament to continue a long-standing and important partnership that supports credit unions across the country.”

The Cross-Party Group continues to provide an essential platform for dialogue between credit unions and policymakers, helping to shape future policy, build networks of good practice, and ensure the voice of the sector is heard at the heart of Scottish decision-making.
