As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, ABCUL is proud to recognise the remarkable contributions of women across the credit union sector. With a steadfast commitment to fostering inclusivity and professional growth, ABCUL’s Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN) continues to empower women within the industry.
Since introducing the GB Global Women’s Leadership Network Steering Committee Panel to delegates at the ABCUL Annual Conference in 2023, the Association has championed initiatives that create a supportive space for women in credit unions.
Since its inception, ABCUL has hosted a range of inspiring events, featuring expert speakers who have explored critical topics such as the importance of diversity in the workplace, overcoming self-doubt, and fostering resilience. These initiatives have been instrumental in encouraging women to advocate for themselves and their value within the industry.
Reflecting on International Women’s Day and the progress within the sector, Debbie Smith-Hands, Head of Member Engagement at ABCUL, commented:
“International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the incredible women shaping the future of credit unions. Throughout my career in this sector, I have had the privilege of meeting and working alongside many inspiring female leaders. Across the country, women are driving innovation and providing the leadership needed to ensure credit unions thrive.
“The work of the Global Women’s Leadership Network has been pivotal in creating opportunities for women to grow, connect, and take charge of their careers with confidence. I am excited to see how we continue to elevate and support female leadership in the years to come.”
This year, ABCUL’s commitment to empowering women will take centre stage at the ABCUL Annual Conference 2025, where the GWLN will host a dedicated session designed to help women break through self-doubt and cultivate resilience. The session, will explore strategies for building self-belief, communicating with impact, and making bold, career-defining decisions. It will serve as a space for women in the credit union movement to connect, grow, and step into their full leadership potential.
Looking ahead to the conference, Debbie added: “With International Women’s Day setting the stage, the timing of this year’s ABCUL Conference in Leeds couldn’t be more fitting. We have a stellar lineup of female speakers from the credit union sector and the wider financial industry, all ready to share their insights and experiences. I am proud to represent women in this sector on the biggest stage for credit unions in Britain and look forward to celebrating the progress we’ve made together.”
