In the heart of inner-city Liverpool sits a community garden area built by Central Liverpool Credit Union. The credit union created a garden for the whole community to enjoy. This month, BBC News visited the garden and spoke with Central Liverpool Credit Union’s CEO, Eileen Halligan.

“We’ve had some amazing volunteers who have put everything into the Central Liverpool to make it what it is today,” says Eileen. “It was very important for us to find a place that would honour the people that built Central Liverpool.”

Eileen added: “Some of the surrounding terraced streets don’t have green space and certainly people who visit here now have a place to sit down and relax.”

Central Liverpool Credit Union celebrated its landmark milestone of 30 years of service to its community two years ago. Eileen said: “Over 30 years, we’ve become a valuable asset to the community and something to be extremely proud of. What started in a small community centre has grown to provide safe savings and ethical loans to over 12,000 members throughout Liverpool.

“Thanks to staff old and new who have supported our credit union. Our credit union did not have to develop a sense of community or convince anyone of the benefits of self-help or the principles of people helping people. The community has demonstrated these values for generations.”
