Celtic Credit Union is marking its 20th anniversary with the launch of Wales’ first mobile credit union branch—bringing essential face-to-face financial services directly to communities across Neath Port Talbot and Swansea.

The mobile branch, funded through a separate Welsh Government initiative just over a year ago, is designed to reach people who may have limited access to physical banking services, particularly in areas where high street banks have closed.

Originally established in Neath, Celtic Credit Union has steadily expanded over two decades to become a trusted provider of ethical and affordable financial services. Business Development Manager, Julie Mallinson, welcomed the new development and reflected on the organisation’s journey:

“Following changes in the landscape of our high streets, we hope that this additional service will provide an innovative solution to maintaining a physical presence in our communities.

“Thanks to funding from the Welsh Government, we can continue to support access to our services for those living in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, including those who cannot or choose not to engage digitally.

“This is especially valuable during the current economic situation, allowing us to promote ethical, affordable lending options for people facing unmanageable debt.

“To be able to launch this service in our 20th anniversary year is an added bonus. I’m incredibly proud to have been part of Celtic Credit Union since its early days and to see how far we’ve come.

“This year is not only a celebration of our past, but a commitment to a stronger future. Enhancing our services now is vital, as we continue to grow sustainably and encourage more people to join a community-focused, ethical alternative to mainstream banking.”

Separately, the Welsh Government has announced an additional £1.3 million to support the expansion of loan services across credit unions in Wales—a move that underscores its broader £2.9 million investment in promoting financial inclusion and access to fair credit.

Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Jane Hutt, said: “We are committed to building a Wales where everyone can access fair financial services, and as a government we’re using all our levers to help people in these uncertain times. This extra £1.3m for credit unions will provide ethical and affordable alternatives to high-cost credit that can trap people in a cycle of debt.

“We want a connected financial system that works for everyone. By supporting credit unions and bringing together partners across the financial sector, we’re taking practical steps to make this a reality for communities throughout Wales.”

The announcement follows the recent ‘Banking in Welsh Communities’ summit, which brought together community organisations and financial institutions to explore inclusive solutions for the financially excluded.

With its new mobile service, Celtic Credit Union is set to continue leading the charge in accessible and ethical financial services—driven by a mission to serve, and now, to reach even further.
