This week, on a sponsored trip by Citi, ABCUL credit unions travelled to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the largest gathering of community development credit unions in the US. This year’s contingent of British credit unions included representatives of Commsave Credit Union, Hoot Credit Union and First Rate Credit Union.
Attending the conference as a representative of ABCUL, Head of Member Engagement, John Haslam said: “It was another exhilarating experience to attend my second Inclusiv conference and a pleasure leading our British delegation across the globe to build great connections and learning from credit union experts.”
The conference brings together thought leaders, policymakers, researchers and practitioners in the fields of financial empowerment and community development to address the tough economic and social justice issues affecting credit unions and communities today.
Opening the first general session of the conference, John Haslam presented on stage alongside Executive Vice President of the Inclusiv Network, Pablo DeFilippi and CEO of the World Council of Credit Unions, Elissa McCarter-LaBorde in a session titled: “Building More Equitable and Resilient Communities Worldwide”. The panel shared insights into inequality, financial inclusion, community development, resiliency and the impact of climate change issues that credit union sectors across the globe are facing.
The delegation also spent time visiting credit unions in the region to learn about the sector, which John Haslam described as “a fantastic experience sharing insights and solutions with credit unions in the area, who deal with similar challenges and opportunities to those in GB”.
John added: “I’d like to thank Citi for making this journey possible and of course our American colleagues at Inclusiv for their generous support in the ongoing partnership between the Association and Inclusiv. Also, special thanks to the Cooperativa Jesus Obrero, Cooperativa De Ahorro Y Crédito and Iowa Credit Union League for hosting our delegation this week.”
