Bedford Credit Union has expanded its geographical reach, meaning thousands more people across Bedfordshire can now join the community bank and access its services.

BCU has widened its common bond to now include all of Central and South Bedfordshire. When the credit union was founded in 1998, its common bond only covered the former Bedfordshire County Council district, excluding areas such as Luton.

Following the abolition of Bedfordshire County Council in 2009 and the division into new unitary authorities, the credit union’s expansion now allows it to offer membership to anyone who lives or works anywhere in Bedfordshire, including Luton, Dunstable, and Leighton Buzzard.

Bedford Credit Union Marketing Manager Katrina said: “For the first time we can accept applications from anyone in Bedfordshire including the residents of Luton, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard. In addition to widening our potential membership, this is invaluable for offering a joined-up approach when partnering with other organisations who support vulnerable people across Bedfordshire as there is no longer a geographical divide.”
