In a letter to the Pentecostal Credit Union (PCU) the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby has commended the work of PCU in its 40th anniversary year.
Since founded by Reverend Carmel Jones back in 1980, PCU has been providing much needed financial services to the Pentecostal Church community, and this year celebrated its 40th Anniversary.
The Archbishop said: “I am sorry to hear the planned celebrations to mark this special anniversary have been postponed due to the current situation with the coronavirus pandemic. However, despite this, the work of the Pentecostal Credit Union has continued apace, with the organisation showing creativity and adaptability to meet the needs of their members.”
“Organisations such as the Pentecostal Credit Union which support their members with grace and compassion and as human beings of infinite worth can provide us with a model for an ethical and just economy.”
Commenting on the Archbishops letter, Chief Executive of PCU, Shane Bowes said: “’We would like to thank the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby for this excellent letter of endorsement. We appreciate his recognition of our work during this unprecedented season of trauma and challenge.
“I also want to thank our directors and staff in making the most robust efforts to support our members, our churches and the communities that they represent as they experience ruinous impacts from Covid-19, both in terms of their health and economic outcomes. Our mission is to economically empower our members, so going forward we will continue to support them and our communities by making the best use of our resources to realise this mission in this the most trying of circumstances”.
