ABCUL is proud to support GambleAware’s latest national campaign, which aims to reduce the stigma surrounding gambling harms and encourage more open conversations across society.

With nearly two-thirds of the public feeling that gambling advertising is inescapable, the risks and consequences of gambling harms have never been more pressing. Anyone can be affected – including children – with an estimated 85,000 11 to 17-year-olds in Great Britain currently experiencing gambling-related harms.

The campaign seeks to break down the barriers that often prevent people from seeking help, and provide resources to guide individuals in recognising the signs of gambling harms and supporting loved ones.

Credit unions across the country are already playing a vital role in supporting those affected. In recent years, many credit unions have taken proactive steps to prevent members from falling into debt due to gambling, offering financial guidance, compassionate support, and responsible lending practices.

Through the use of open banking, some credit unions are able to assess loan affordability and, where gambling behaviours are identified, signpost members towards professional help. This approach not only supports the individual but also contributes to reducing the wider stigma – one conversation at a time.

“Credit unions exist to serve their members and strengthen their communities. Supporting the GambleAware campaign aligns with our core values of care, responsibility, and inclusivity,” said Head of Member Engagement at ABCUL, Debbie Smith-Hands. “We want people to know that credit unions are a safe space where they can find help and support without judgement.

“As the cost-of-living crisis continues to place financial pressure on households, ABCUL is committed to ensuring credit unions remain a trusted source of ethical financial support for those who need it most.”
