This week, ABCUL published and distributed its Politicians’ Guides to Credit Unions, following the result of July’s general election, which resulted in the Labour party winning a majority achieving 411 seats.

The politicians’ guides inform Members of the Government on the credit union sector in the devolved nations of England, Scotland and Wales. They also cover the essentials of what credit unions are, the range of valuable services credit unions provide and ABCUL’s recommended policy actions to achieve further sustainable growth of the sector

ABCUL requested feedback from its membership across Great Britain to hear their views on how local and national support from the Government will contribute to the sector’s future success.

Credit unions identified that to achieve greater growth in the sector, there needs to  be a greater push for:

  • Promotion of credit unions as an ethical, affordable financial service provider for everyone.
  • Support in forming new mutually beneficial employer partnerships with credit unions.
  • Supporting credit unions in attracting capital investment.

“Credit unions have enjoyed the support of Government’s across the nation to build a stronger credit union sector in each nation that is well-positioned to grow following the formation of a new Labour Government,” says ABCUL CEO, Robert Kelly. “ABCUL will continue to work with local and national Government across Great Britain to maximise the promotion and support for the credit union sector going forward.”
