ABCUL Board Profile - Director for the East Midlands

Richard Munro - Director for the East Midlands (Joined ABCUL Board 2018)

Richard is a volunteer director and Secretary at Commsave Credit Union where he has held officer roles since 1995.

He is also employed part-time by the credit union and reports to the Board on governance, policy reviews board and director development, HR and external relations.  He also acts as a volunteer Appropriate Adult, supporting young people in the criminal justice system.

Why did you first get involved in credit unions?
I had read about credit unions and supported the idea that people working together can improve their own lives.

Why did you choose to stand for election to the ABCUL Board?
To be totally honest, I hadn’t through about standing for this role.  However, the term of our existing director was coming to an end and I was asked by several credit unions in our region if I was prepared to stand for this position.

What have you gained from being a member of the ABCUL Board?
I have a wider understanding of the issues facing our sector and a much greater appreciation of what our small staff team do to support the sector.

What have you been able to contribute to the ABCUL Board?
Like any new role, it does take a while to get up to speed but I believe I have an enquiring mind and I am willing to challenge the status quo.  I bring real life ‘shop-floor’ working experience to our discussions as well as senior leadership experience from my professional career.

What advice would you give to  people considering standing for the ABCUL Board?
I’d suggest speaking to an existing director to understand the role in detail.  Think not only about what the Board would gain from your knowledge, skills and experience but also what you could gain in your own personal development.
