ABCUL Board Profile - Karen Farrow

Karen Farrow - Director for the Wales

Why did you first get involved in credit unions?

I used to work for the Local Authority and would walk past a poster on the staff noticeboard and think 'that's a good idea.....for other people'. I worked in housing and eventually got talking to somebody who explained the business model and the benefits for local people and local communities and was hooked.

Why did you choose to stand for election to the ABCUL Board?

I passionately believe in co-operative principles which will only work if people step forward and take their share of responsibility. My credit union has gained a lot of benefit from being a member. When the opportunity arose at a suitable time, I wanted to support that.

What have you gained from being a member of the ABCUL Board?

I have better understanding of the issues faced by a trade body and by member credit unions. Having more awareness of the bigger picture has helped in the management of my own organisation.

What have you been able to contribute to the ABCUL Board?

I have been involved in the sector for many years and have a real understanding of the challenges faced by member credit unions and the need for a strong, vibrant and inclusive trade body. I always act in the best interests of the collective membership and will question or challenge where required.

What advice would you give to people considering standing for the ABCUL Board? Do you feel that you have something to offer - experience and skills that will help to drive the organisation forward ?

If its the right time for you personally, give it serious consideration and find out more from existing or retired Directors. ABCUL can only thrive if different people from all parts of the membership step forward.
