Retired former Chief Executive of the Furness Building Society, Rob Cairns, has signed up to support the founding of a credit union for Barrow-in-Furness, the North West Evening Mail, has reported.

Retiring at the end of last year, Rob has decided to use his considerable experience in financial services and Financial Services Authority regulation to help get the fledgling credit union off the ground.

Speaking to North West Evening Mail, he said:  “I very much believe that Barrow needs a credit union and I think with my previous financial services experience, particularly with the FSA, that I can help them achieve their goal. I think a credit union would benefit the town by helping those people who may not have bank accounts and may, at the present time, go to organisations that charge a very high rate of interest for loans because that is all that is available to them.

“I think if a credit union can be set up, which can offer responsible rates of interest, I think it will benefit lots of people in the community.”
