Serving the Welsh Credit Union sector for over 20 years, President of Dragonsavers Credit Union, Ian Gylee was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Credit Unions of Wales.
Ian began his work in credit unions in 1996 when he was part of a small steering group that later became Border Vale Credit Union. Following the merger of five credit unions in the borough in 2003, Dragonsavers Credit Union was formed which he continues to serve as President.
Ian was presented his award by the Patron of Credit Unions of Wales, Jane Hutt AM and BBC broadcaster, Jennifer Jones at the event in Cardiff. Speaking after receiving the award, Ian said: “I am absolutely overwhelmed to receive this award which I accepted on behalf of our staff, members and volunteers at Dragonsavers Credit Union. They work incredibly hard to ensure the ongoing success of the credit union movement and the many financial services we have available to the public”.
The awards celebrate and acknowledge the valuable contribution made by credit union volunteers, members, schools and partner employers. General Manager of Dragonsavers Credit Union, Christina Stoneman describes Ian’s presence around the credit unions help it to thrive, Christina said: “He has an excellent rapport with members, staff and fellow directors and his unassuming manner coupled with his ability to discern when to lead and when to let others take on the responsibility has seen Dragonsavers thrive”.
Back in January, Ian also received the Edward Filene Awards for Performance Excellence ‘Single Benefactor’ award which recognised his work in demonstrating how credit unions can be a viable alternative to high street banks in Great Britain and Ireland.
